Shibari (縛り) - Japanese word meaning “to bind” - is an ancient form of Japanese artistic bondage, achieved by constraining the body with ropes. Peculiarity of Shibari is the use of specific rope and knots patterns with which the rope is applied and aesthetic rules: the position with which the other person is tied in strategic anatomical points is important, since it takes on a symbolic and communicative value. The primary objective of Shibari does not, in fact, lie in the control of the tied person, but in the aesthetic sense and visual pleasure unleashed by the shapes created by the pressure of the ropes on the skin.
